You probably picked up this book because of the buzzwords Ajax, REST, and patterns. You will probably read this introduction and skim through the pages. But I want to stop you from skimming through the pages, at least for a moment. I want you to read this introduction and then decide whether you want to buy the book.
Here are the things you need to know about Ajax:

• This book for the server side focuses on using Java and C# .NET. The patterns can be used with Python or Ruby on Rails. The XML Programming Bible provides a single source for developers who need to implement XML and Web service solutions on an MS or J2EE platform, or both. A recent Amazon.com search returned 393 book titles that contain the keyword “XML.” However, most of them are introductory books that are heavy on XML theory and light on practical examples. In any country’s court of law, evidence is as compelling as—and often more
compelling than—personal testimony by a credible eyewitness.
The well-known warning given to criminal suspects in American movies
“anything you say can and will be used against you” applies to any country
and is not limited to criminal proceedings, but applies to civil litigation as
well where no such warning is given. Furthermore, what “can and will be
used against you” is not only what you say, but also what evidence can be
obtained against you.
Most every person knows only too well that evidence can—and has
often been—planted, manufactured, or simply taken selectively out of context
to paint an image that bears little resemblance to reality.
Up until about a decade ago, documentary evidence was mostly on
paper. Even computer evidence amounted to reams of printed pages. This is
no longer the case. The electronic version of a file that was created by
and/or stored in a computer can be far more damaging to an individual or to
an organization because it contains not only the documentary evidence
itself but also “data about the data” (such as when it was created, when it
was revised, how it was revised, using whose software).

It is almost sad that the word “Beginner” is in the title of this book. Don’t get me wrong; if you are a beginner, then this title is for you. But it is designed to last you well beyond your beginning days. What is covered in this book is necessary for the beginner, but there is simply too much information for you to remember all of it all the time, and so it is laid out in a fashion that should make a solid review and reference item even for the more intermediate, and, yes, even advanced user.
The beginning user will want to start right at the beginning. Things are designed such that just about everything in this book is a genuine “need to know” sort of thing. With the possible exception of the chapters on XML, Reporting Services and Integration Services, every item in this book is a fundamental item to you having the breadth of understanding you need to make well-informed choices on how you approach your SQL Server problems.

For the intermediate user, you can probably skip perhaps as far as chapter 7 or 8 for starting. While I would still recommend scanning the prior chapters for holes in your skills or general review, you can probably skip ahead with little harm done and get to something that might be a bit more challenging for you. Advanced users, in addition to utilizing this as an excellent reference resource, will probably want to focus on Chapter 12 and beyond. Virtually everything from that point forward should be of some interest (the new debugging, transactions, XML, Reporting Services and more!).

The purpose of this book is to help you build relational databases and get valuable information out of them by using SQL. SQL is the international standard language used around the world to create and maintain relational databases. This edition covers the latest version of the standard, SQL:2003.
This book doesn’t tell you how to design a database (I do that in Database Development For Dummies, also published by Wiley Publishing, Inc.). Here I assume that you or somebody else has already created a valid design. I then illustrate how you implement that design by using SQL. If you suspect that you don’t have a good database design, by all means, fix your design before you try to build the database. The earlier you detect and correct problems in a development project, the cheaper the corrections will be.

For the most part, this book is intended to be read from beginning to end. It guides the reader through
the basics of algorithms, data structures, and performance characteristics through to specific algorithms
for sorting, searching, and so on. To this end, the book is divided into four main sections:

• The first five chapters explain the basics of algorithms, such as iteration, recursion, and so on,
  before introducing the reader to some fundamental data structures such as lists, stacks, and
  queues.
• Chapters 6 through 10 deal with various sorting algorithms, as well as some prerequisite topics
  such as keys and ordering.
• Chapters 7 through 15 cover efficient techniques for storing and searching by way of hashing,
  trees, sets, maps, and so on.
• Chapters 16 through 19 include several specialized, more advanced topics, as well as a general
  discussion on common performance pitfalls and optimization techniques.
  Each chapter introduces concepts that build on previous chapters and provides the necessary background
  for subsequent ones. That said, it should still be possible to open the book at any chapter and,
